TRAINING COURSE

Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) for the Aviation Sector

Introduction

This training course is provided in partnership with ENVISA

The implementation of the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) by the European Union implicates new requirements on aircraft operators worldwide. The CO2 emitted by aircraft in 2012 will have to be compensated via the surrendering of CO2 allowances bought on the market. The first allowances will have to be surrendered by April 30th every year starting in 2013. The cost of the EU ETS for airlines will be significant: it has been estimated above one billion dollars for the first year only for the whole sector by IATA's Aviation & Environment Director (source : GreenAirOnline).

Participation to this course will enable better understanding of the mechanisms of the EU ETS in order to optimize compliance efforts. It will also provide indications on the best ways to mitigate the risks associated to the scheme (be it financial or managerial risks).

The material for this course is customized based on real life examples. Samples of monitoring plans, emissions reports, and data will be presented to participants together with other airliners' relevant documents (such as fuel slips / fuel delivery notes, load sheets etc.).

Role-playing games might be organized on request in particular in order to demonstrate the functioning of the CO2 allocation market.

Note: Custom-made training courses dedicated to particular aspects of the EU ETS can be arranged on request. In particular, training tailored to suit the needs of competent authorities are possible.
