TRAINING COURSE

Aviation and the Environment

Introduction

Interested in this course? Scheduled or on-site? Please contact us via training@jaato.com

Anyone working in civil aviation must recognise that the environment is now firmly established as a priority for the sector, alongside those of safety and security. Noise and local air quality are major sources of concern around airports and the target of specific legislation at EU and national levels. In addition, climate change is now an urgent and important issue for all spheres of human activity and thus a key driver in efforts to reduce aircraft engine emissions.

Tackling aviation’s environmental impacts is a problem that cannot be solved by any individual party but instead needs a combined effort by all concerned, whether from government or industry. Thus, all those working in the community need to be aware of this significant challenge to aviation’s future and how it is being addressed.

This training course seeks to provide such awareness at an appropriate level of technical detail, so that students are able to gain a clear understanding of the issues and solutions involved, and can apply this knowledge in their daily activities

Course Content

On completion of the course, the participant will have an understanding of:

  • Why the environment is a priority for the civil aviation community and how the various members of the community can contribute to addressing it
  • The major environmental impacts related to aircraft noise and gaseous emissions, together with the technical, operational and economic measures being taken to reduce them
  • The key items of ICAO guidance and EU legislation, including examples of how policy is framed in such documents
  • In the case of engine emissions, the wider context of the UN process, the Kyoto Protocol and current negotiations on a successor agreement
  • The environmental impacts associated with the operation of airports and the aircraft lifecycle (design to disposal)
